Sat 16th March 9.15am : Misconceptions in Feline Nursing - Clinical

This presentation is focused on some of the common misconceptions facing feline patients in the clinical setting. There are three main subjects to be discussed including nutrition, pain and fluid therapy. These topics have been chosen as they showcase some of the major differences between the feline and canine species, especially in the veterinary setting. Nutrition will delve into a discussion on the inappetant cat, why nutrition is important, how to avoid food aversion, hepatic lipidosis and alternative methods of feeding.
The topic of pain will include information on the painful cat - including common signs, as well as misconceptions surrounding pain in cats, aggression versus pain, and also acute and chronic pain.

Lastly, the topics considered for fluid therapy include the basics of fluid therapy, recommended fluid therapy guidelines and fluid therapy risks in the feline patient.

Sat 16th March 10.00am : Misconceptions in Feline Nursing - Behaviour

This lecture is focused on some of the common misconceptions facing feline patients regarding their behaviour in the veterinary setting. Topics will include feline friendly handling, the feline senses and how they affect behaviour, and finally, how to change the way you think when it comes to nursing ‘difficult’ felines in clinic.

Sat 16th March 4.15pm : Nursing the Critical Care Patient

A critical patient is one described as having vital signs that are unstable, and not within normal limits. They often have life-threatening injuries or illnesses. When nursing the critically ill patient, various aspects should be considered including but not limited to, time limitations, triage, pathophysiology, stabilisation and monitoring. This presentation will have a discussion on caring for the critical patient (both canine and feline), based off Kirby’s rule of 20.

Sun 17th March 9.00am : Caring for the Cat with a Urinary Catheter

Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), or the ‘blocked’ cat, is a common emergency in the veterinary clinic. This lecture discusses nursing care of the cat in hospital with a urinary catheter. Topics include emergency treatment on presentation, followed by placement of the urinary catheter, and finally delves into hospitalisation considerations until time of discharge.
