Sat 16th March 1.30pm: Looking Through The Keyhole - Introduction To Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a developing field in the veterinary surgical discipline. Its promise of reduced morbidity, improved recovery times and minimally invasive nature has lead to pursuit of more and more involved procedures to treat an ever-expanding list of surgical conditions, which have previously only been treatable with open laparotomy.

Laparoscopy, although most often performed by surgeons with more advanced surgical training, is still able to provide treatment avenue to the general practitioner with a surgical interest, and the willingness to invest some time and money into training and equipment. Basic laparoscopic procedures such as laparoscopic ovariectomy, cryptorchid orchiectomy, lap-assisted gastropexy and liver biopsies are all possible for the novice to intermediate level surgeon with some investment and training in use of the laparoscope and the associated surgical instruments.

This presentation will focus on the equipment and training possible for the beginner laparoscopist, and a summary of the possible conditions that may be treatable in general practice using laparoscopy, as well as summarise some of the evidence supporting their use in small animal veterinary patients. You too can become a laparoscopic surgeon if you want to!
