Sat 16th March 10.00am : Clinical Oncologic Cytology

The ability to preliminarily interpret cytologic samples in-house is an invaluable clinical skill for veterinarians in all types of clinical practice.

Today’s presentation aims to provide practical advice regarding fine needle aspirate sample collection, as well as a detailed discussion of an approach to the preliminary interpretation of cytologic samples. The steps of this interpretive approach begin with an assessment of sample quality and ultimately arrive at a reasonable and ideally finite list of differential diagnoses. The information gained from this step-by-step approach is aimed at not only furthering effective communication with clients regarding the value and expectations associated with cytologic sample submission, but also at facilitating timely case discussions with clients, providing more specific clinical advice and guidance.

Sat 16th March 2.15pm : Oncology Updates: Apocrine Gland Anal Sac Adenocarcinoma

The perianal region of the dog contains several anatomic structures, including glands, from which tumours may develop. Apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma is one such tumour.
While this tumour represents only 2% of all skin and subcutaneous tumours, and only 17% of all perianal tumours in the dog, it is the most common malignancy in this region, especially in older female dogs

Today’s presentation will provide an update on the most current information known about AGASACA, including the spectrum of potential presenting clinical signs, signalment considerations in presumptively diagnosing a perianal mass, a reasonable approach to diagnosis, the scope and importance of timely staging, treatment options, and including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and multimodal therapy, and the range of anticipated outcomes.

The presented information is based upon both historic and the most recently published literature regarding AGASACA, which does challenge several of the long-held beliefs regarding this disease, and should therefore change current clinical practice.
